The area was established in 1783, when 1,400 American Loyalists from the New York state region fled the Revolution and settled first in Treasure Cay at Carleton Point. From there, some moved on to nearby islands of New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay, Hopetown, Man-O-War or settled south in Marsh Harbour. Early attempts at cotton farming failed, resulting in a population reduction to around 400 settlers. These pioneers developed the economy of the island with an expertise in wooden boatbuilding, a tradition that has been passed down to present day.

Treasure Cay began as a resort destination when developed by Captain Leonard Thompson, a former Royal Air Force pilot from nearby Marsh Harbour. In 1962, Mr. Thompson and America’s largest Chevrolet dealer at the time, Dumas Milner, joined forces in creating the community of Treasure Cay. The partnership also resulted in the formation of seven miles of canal systems throughout the mangroves.

This unspoiled scenic area inspired the creation of a hotel, condo projects and private home developments, a practice that continues today. This seaside community has grown to a population of 2,000 with 1,100 private homes of both full and part time residents, a multi-cultural mix comprised mostly of Bahamians, Americans, Europeans and Canadians. To preserve the everlasting, unspoiled splendor of the area, much care and consideration is given in developing future projects.

The natural beauty and pristine waters are major attractions to living in or visiting Treasure Cay. Treasure Cay Beach is the most sparkling natural feature on the island of Abaco. Breathtaking is the only word for this world-renowned beach; a 3.5-mile stretch of powdery white sand, matched only in brilliance by the turquoise water caressing its shore. There are no pictures that can prepare a visitor for the awesome site of this beach…its size, its white powdery sand and those beautiful blue waters. With all that and no crowds, there's plenty of room to create your own private paradise.

Visitors to Abaco are generally guests of Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina. The resort’s layout has embraced the nuances of the community. One feels connected to the locals in sharing grocery store visits, shopping for beachwear, enjoying morning aromas from the bakery and visiting the canvas shop or post office. Many visitors arrive by boat and enjoy the many features offered at the 150 slip marina. Live like a local…rent a motor boat, find a private beach, go barefoot, try fishing or tour neighboring islands and cays. The best part is, there are many choices. One can relax and do nothing at all, or be adventurous and go snorkeling, diving or golfing at the championship course. These activities are a way of life for Treasure Cay residents and relished by visitors.

There are several locations to wet your whistle, from the Spinnaker Lounge to the Coco Beach Bar and the Tipsy Seagull Bar. The Tipsy Seagull is renowned as the local hot spot that features weekly live entertainment and dancing ‘til the wee hours. About 100 yards from the water’s edge sits the Coco Beach Bar & Grill, famous for its Bahamian drink specialties and local grilled favorites. This quaint, nautical facility features weekly entertainment, picnic tables, lounge chairs, thatched shades and a water sport cabana for Hobie Cat, kayak and banana boat rentals. The Spinnaker Restaurant is best for upscale dining, featuring both indoor and outdoor seating in a peaceful setting.

Treasure Cay is ideal for group events including weddings, family reunions or friends creating special memories. Excitement fills the air in early summer, with the commencement of several blue marlin fishing tournaments. In 1984, the 1st Annual Treasure Cay Billfish Tournament was hosted by the hotel. By 1988, Treasure Cay had established itself as the #1 spot for catching blue marlin in the Bahamas. In 1996, a 1,030 lb. blue marlin, the second largest ever in the Bahamas, was caught off Treasure Cay. This is the first “Grander” caught in the Abacos, and is on display in the Tipsy Seagull Bar. Tournament information and photos can be found on www.treasurecayfishing.com. The nearby fishing grounds are also known for their fabulous wahoo, tuna and sailfish, as well as bottom fishing. One can also stay close to land for a fabulous bonefishing experience!

The convenience of being so near to the United States makes travel a stress-free experience. Whether traveling by land or sea, Treasure Cay is just a short boat cruise from the U.S. and is easily accessible by air on scheduled airlines. In addition, the airport has an abundance of space to lodge private aircraft. This community offers a laid-back lifestyle with a number of conveniences, creating a way of life that’s truly charming.

Once enchanted by Treasure Cay, it will be easy to imagine this as a home away from home. It is surprisingly affordable to live a dream! Whether it’s a home, villa, vacation property, condo or raw land, there are many opportunities in this island paradise!
